Open Your Closet to a World of Possibilities: Getting real about your wardrobe.

Does this feel familiar? You're staring into a jam-packed closet, feeling like you have nothing to wear. Frustrated and feeling defeated rather than confident in your clothes. But what if the issue isn't a lack of clothes, but rather a surplus of things we no longer need and the angst that comes along with trying to fit our square pegs into these round holes?

De-cluttering your closet can be a game-changer. It's not just about getting rid of clothes; it's about creating a space that is functional and inspiring and supportive. Imagine opening your closet doors and feeling a sense of calm and clarity instead feeling overwhelmed. Sounds nice, right?

Here's how to make it happen:

1. The Big Empty:  Take a deep breath and take everything that does not belong there out. . This allows you to see exactly what you have and assess each clothing item with fresh eyes item with fresh eyes.

2. The Question Game:  Now comes the fun part! Take one item at a time As you hold each

item, ask yourself some key questions:

  • Does it fit?  (Be honest!)

  • Is it aspirational?**( more on this below)

  • Have I worn it in the last year?

  • Do I feel good in it? (Comfort and confidence are key!)

  • Is it damaged or stained beyond repair?

  • Does it still reflect my current style?

3. The Sorting Ceremony:  Create three piles: "Keep," "Donate/Sell," and "Maybe." Be decisive with the "Keep" and "Donate/Sell" piles. The "Maybe" pile is for those items you're unsure about. Revisit this pile in a few months and see if your feelings have changed.

4. The Organization Celebration: Now that you've pared down your wardrobe, it's time to organize what's left. Invest in matching hangers (preferably heavy duty velvet hangers), shelf dividers, and storage bins to maximize space and create a visually appealing display.

5. The Maintenance Mantra:  De-cluttering isn't a one-time event; it's an ongoing process. Make a habit of regularly reviewing your closet and letting go of items that no longer serve you.

Bonus Tip: Don't forget about shoes, accessories, and sentimental items! These can also contribute to closet clutter.

**Before I go , a word about aspirational clothing. It fit a couple of years ago and you hope to get back into it. OK, but aspirational clothing should not be in your closet. While it really shouldn't be in your home at all there are instances when it makes sense to hold onto them(postpartum, recovery from illness, etc) Why you ask? Energy. In this case negative energy invading your closet silently making you feel as if you've failed, you're not enough....just dinging you subconscious day after day. I've been there. I had a fabulous , sexy- but not too sexy dress that I wore to an amazing event years ago. It hung in my closet as I outgrew it in size and lifestyle until one day I said "enough is enough" Guess what, not only did I not miss it, but the energy in my closet shifted. REALLY shifted. If you have aspirational items you can't let go of please box them(with some cedar chips) and store them anywhere else. I promise you'll see a difference.

De-cluttering your closet can be a truly transformative experience. It can free up physical space, reduce stress, and even help you rediscover your personal style. So, open your closet doors and embrace the possibilities!
