Conquer the Clutter: 10 Questions to Ask Yourself When Organizing:


Organizing can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. One strategy is to approach it armed with the right questions. Recently some of these questions have come up with clients. Here is a short list of how to work through uncertainty while de-cluttering


1. What is my ultimate goal?

Before you even touch a thing, define your vision. Do you want a more peaceful home? A more efficient workspace? A space that reflects your personal style? Knowing your "why" will keep you motivated when the going gets tough. This week I worked with a client who's goal is to de-clutter now so his next of kin are not saddled with this work. He views it as his calling. When decisions become difficult we simply remind him he feels called to the work. What organizing work are you called to?


2. What's the emotional attachment?

This is crucial, especially when dealing with sentimental items. Acknowledge the emotions tied to an object, but don't let them paralyze you. Ask yourself: Does this object truly bring me joy, or is it weighing me down with memories I no longer need to hold onto? There is a new design trend this year called joy decorating, and while more maximalist than I like , the idea of surrounding yourself with objects that you love and letting go of the "should " objects and the things we keep out of guilt is a standard in the organizing world.


3. Paper Chase: Am I done with this part of my life?

Paper clutter is a common culprit. Beyond the basic "do I need this information?", delve deeper. Does this document represent a past chapter I'm ready to close? Am I holding onto it "just in case," or am I genuinely likely to need it again?  Sometimes, letting go of paper is about letting go of the past. Consider if other, more fulfilling aspects of your current life are taking precedence. This can help you release the hold the past has on you.


4. Fashion Forward (or Backward?): Do I like it? Does it fit? Is it in style?

Clothes are another emotional minefield. Be honest with yourself. Do I feel good when I wear this? Does it flatter my current body? Is it something I'd buy today?  Don't hold onto clothes "just in case" – you deserve to wear things you love and that make you feel confident.

At the very least remove clothes that don't fit of flatter from your closet, make space for more positive energy in your wardrobe and when in doubt thing about Stacy and Clinton (from What not to wear) and dress the body you're in today.



5. Functionality First: Does it work? What is the likelihood I will fix it?

We all have those gadgets or tools we swear we'll fix "someday." But be realistic. Has that "someday" arrived? If not, is it likely to? Is it worth the time, money, and effort to repair, or would it be simpler and more cost-effective to replace it?

6. Lifestyle Check: Does it fit my current lifestyle?

Our lives evolve, and our belongings should reflect that. That fancy espresso machine you used daily before kids? It might be gathering dust now. Does this item support my current routines and priorities? Or is it simply taking up valuable space?

7. The "One Year" Rule:

A helpful guideline for items you're unsure about: Have I used this in the past year? If not, what are the chances I'll use it in the next year?  This can help you distinguish between items you truly need and those that are just taking up space.

8. The Power of "Maybe" Box:

If you're truly struggling to let go, create a "maybe" box. Put questionable items in it, seal it, and date it. In a few months, revisit the box. You might be surprised how easily you can part with those items after some time has passed.

9. Where will it go?

Before you start de-cluttering, have a plan for where unwanted items will go. Will you donate them? Sell them? Recycle them? Knowing this beforehand will streamline the process.

10. Start Small and Celebrate Success!

Don't try to tackle everything at once. Start with a small, manageable area, like a drawer or a shelf. Once you've successfully de-



cluttered that space, celebrate your accomplishment! This will motivate you to keep going.

Organizing is more than just tidying up; it's about creating a space that supports your goals and well-being. By asking yourself these questions, you can make informed decisions about your belongings and create a more organized and fulfilling life.
